About Feltmakers North

Our Story

Feltmakers North was born from a shared passion of feltmaking. In December 2010, three dedicated felters – Gail Cooke, Fiona Harvey, and Liz Nicholls – came together when they realised there was little available for enthusiastic felters across Northern Ireland. What started as a simple idea has grown into a thriving community that celebrates the ancient art of feltmaking.

Based in Hillsborough, we’re proud to be Northern Ireland’s premier felting group, bringing together around 25-30 passionate makers from across the region.

Who We Are

Our diverse community welcomes everyone – from complete beginners taking their first tentative steps into the world of felt, to experienced artists pushing the boundaries of the craft. What unites us isn’t skill level, but our shared love for this versatile and rewarding art form.

When We Meet

Every third Saturday of the month, our community gathers to share, learn, and create together. These monthly meetings are the heart of our group, where techniques are shared, practical help is freely given, and the latest news from the felting world is discussed. Whether you’re troubleshooting a challenging project or celebrating a creative breakthrough, you’ll find support and encouragement here.

Our Mission

Feltmakers North exists to nurture and grow the art of feltmaking throughout Northern Ireland. We believe in the power of shared knowledge and creative community.

Our core objectives are to:

  • Promote and develop the art of feltmaking in all its forms
  • Inspire, unite and inform our members through regular gatherings and shared experiences
  • Share knowledge and skills freely, ensuring everyone can learn and grow
  • Facilitate exhibitions that showcase the incredible diversity of contemporary felting
  • Provide a welcoming space for both individual exploration and collaborative projects through demonstrations and workshops

What Makes Us Special

As a not-for-profit organisation, we’re driven purely by passion for the craft and community spirit. We believe that feltmaking is for everyone, regardless of experience level or background. Our relaxed, supportive environment encourages experimentation, celebrates successes, and turns challenges into learning opportunities.
